superior sells stencil pencils. They are about $2 each and you can draw on tracing paper and then use it like a spirit transfer paper stencil. It actually works pretty well but you have to keep the pencil sharp for detail. It's an inexpensive alternative. The one I got from them worked well but the lead continually broken when being sharpened. (like it was broken inside the wood). I don't think that is the norm, though.

ball point pen is the best for doing the final transfer. smooth thin solid lines. (and they don't need sharpening )

edit: I'm sorry I mis read the post. I was talking about using a pen for the carbon copy transfer... sorry.
