Used to put tattoo pigment into the skin, the needles are actually a grouping of multiple needles soldered together on a needle bar. Needle groupings can come in different arrangements for lining or shading. Loose groupings are preferred for solid filling. Tight groupings are preferred for lining or tight detailed areas. Needles can be different diameter themselves and different taper. Some needles are textured in efforts to help lay in more pigment.

A professional tattoo artist can make his or her own needles, but the majority or artists purchase pre-made needle groupings.

Needles must be sterilized prior to using them on a client in an autoclave.

Some pre-made needles come pre-sterilized - while others do not.
