Best advice I can give is – don’t try it out on someone you love!
It will not be good, as your first one –
esp. if you don’t haver a mentor to train you.

Tips: Draw the picture on paper the night before
      possibly paint the picture too
learn the image so you can focus on tattooing not art

use mags – and soft running machines
do not over work the skin

      -best of luck!

I agree with Canvas, dont do it. You must know technique and skill with tattoo machines and be comfortable with the machines.

And you should have some familiarity of the portrait your gonna tattoo. That way when you tattoo your familiar with the design. You’ll be familiar with the strokes and such. So know how to draw it before tattooing it.

If your questioning this then its safe to assume your not ready for something of this caliber(portrait). sorry for the bad news, maybe not the advice you were hoping for.

I ended up having him hold off on it until I’ve done it a few times on practice skin, but thanks to all for their advise.
