There is more often than not, an o-ring looped around the front
spring. This will aid in the transition of energy created by the
front spring hitting the contact screw. Different thickness o-rings
should be experimented with. There are some artists and machine
builders who swear by them, others that say they simply
cut down on noise. I have personally not seen a drastic change
when tattooing with or without. I believe that if you can get used
to tattooing without them you will be better off, because they do
eventually dry rot or snap which will leave you trying to find the
exact same style and hardness of rubber to replicate the tuning
you had going before it broke.
